An ultra-thin LED sky panel — about 5 cm deep — that mounts flat on the ceiling you already have. No hole to cut, no joists to open, no drywall to patch: it wires to the existing light box and goes up in twenty minutes. 300 × 600 mm, tunable 2700–6500K with a sunrise-to-sunset programme, remote in the box, ordinary wall switch on the wall.
There are two kinds of artificial skylight. One is a collimated system that throws hard parallel sunbeams and casts real shadows on the floor — it is 30 to 40 cm deep, needs a structural opening and a ceiling cavity, and costs several thousand dollars per aperture. The other is a sky panel: a deep blue luminous field with daylight colour, built thin.
This is the second kind, and we would rather tell you that on the first screen than have you discover it after delivery. There is no parallel sunbeam and no hard shadow. What there is: a 5 cm body that goes onto a finished ceiling without a contractor, daylight from 2700K to 6500K, a sky that reads as depth from across the room, and a $299 price instead of a $4,000 one.
For the rooms we are aiming at — a basement, an interior office, a windowless bathroom, a hallway — that trade is the right way round. Those ceilings have nowhere to put 40 cm of fixture, and the problem to solve is not shadow direction. It is that the room has no daylight and no sky at all.

The panel tunes across the full daylight range and can run the whole arc on its own, so a room with no window still knows what time it is. Set it and forget it, or take the remote and hold any point on the scale.
Kill the circuit, take down the existing fixture and leave the box and its two leads exposed. Nothing else about the ceiling changes — no cut-out, no patching, no dust sheet across the room.
The mounting plate screws to the existing box, and the panel's leads join the fixture leads with the connectors supplied — line, neutral, ground. Same connection you would make for any ceiling light.
The panel locks onto the plate, sitting about 5 cm off the ceiling. Power back on and it runs from the wall switch straight away; the remote sets colour temperature, brightness and the day programme.
If the room has no ceiling fixture, or you want the panel where the box isn't, an electrician needs to run a feed to that point first — that part is not a DIY job. Ontario electrical work on new circuits must be done by a licensed electrician.
